Back to previous page  UNIQUE ANTIQUE'S Caring for your Textiles Textile conservation is a new and uncharted area. Only in the last 30 years have museums begun to search for ways to preserve their textile collections. There are no absolute authorities. Treatment does not have to be grandiose or extremely technical. An action as simple as changing the fold lines in an article can sometimes prevent serious damage. Good old common sense is as valid as a wealth of scientific textbook information. Never store your textiles in plastic, fabrics need to breathe. Refold often. Distribute weight evenly. Stuff folds with acid free paper.   Washing your Antique Quilts The best way to wash an antique quilt is in your bathtub. Use cold water and woolite or some other non brightening gentle detergent. For spots add some oxy boost (1st choice) or oxy clean (2nd choice). Make sure the crystals are desolved before you add the quilt to the water. You can soak it in these products overnight if you need to and they will not harm the fabrics. If spots are still there go ahead and finish washing it, treat with spray and wash stain stick and resoak overnight in oxy boost. Fabrics prior to 1930 need to be tested for color fastness, especially reds. Drape it out in the tub. Give it a stir or a poke every now and then. Rinse two or three times. You want to be sure and get all the soap out of your textile. Anything left in the fabric will cause it to deteriorate down the road. After draining the water out let it sit for a while. A lot more water will come out of it. The idea here is to get as much of the water out while it is sitting in the tub. After it sits for a while maybe prop it up on something so more water will roll out. Be very careful with your quilt at this point. It is at it's most fragile state. Any pulling or stretching can cause damage. After draining, gently push or roll it into some sort of container to take outside to dry. It will need to lay flat to dry. I personally use my kids trampoline...it's a fantastic quilt dryer. (If you don't have any spots to soak out then washing the whole quilt on the trampoline works great!) But, you may have to use a piece of flat clean concrete instead. Gently roll it out of your bucket and let is sit a while just like that. You want some of the water to dry out before pulling or stretching in any way. In the absence of a trampoline, maybe put it on a screen or something to let the water drip out. The next step is to lay it flat to dry. Never hang or pull on your quilt when it's wet. Remember, sunshine is great for spots but long exposure can harm your fabrics, especially older ones.     Listings To protect bidder privacy, when the price or highest bid on an item reaches or exceeds a certain level, User IDs will be displayed as anonymous names.
