Hello and welcome to ~The Cottage Gate~, original designs by me, Amy. I am the mother of 2 children, ages 9 and 12, and wife of 16 years to my high school sweetheart. We make our home in the piney woods of northeast Texas, where we live in a country farmhouse on 10 acres. Six years ago, as a stay at home mom, I designed and sold vintage fabric pillows on ebay and in a local antique store. I then went back to work as a full time teacher in our local school district. Two years agao I "took the leap", quit my teaching job, and began pursuing my true passion of designing and creating one of a kind items. I have always loved all things old, antiques and vintage linens, lace, quilts, fabrics. More recently I have begun collecting antique sewing items. I am truly inspired by the old handcrafts of women, the amount of time put into old handwork like tatting and embroidery, quilting, spinning and weaving is amazing. I believe that these vintage pieces, when found, deserve to be recreated into beautiful new creations, a memoir to the meticulous hands of a long ago time. I also have a passion for gardening and have slowly started to create my cottage gardens around our home. For a time I also did some writing, mostly short stories and poetry, and was very lucky to have several pieces published. When I was designing 6 years ago, I told family and friends later, that it was the first time in my life that I felt true to my spirit. I come from 3 generations of "stitchers". My mother taught me how to sew as a girl. Her mother, my Nanny was a designer for her own square dance dress company, a company her and my Papa built from nothing. It makes me smile to think of her looking down on me, as I sit down to my sewing machine. I now design and sew full time in my studio, a wonderful open rafter attic space that my sweet husband did for me. I love to use beautiful designer fabrics as well as vintage barkcloths, antique lace, vintage floral tablecloths, and any other fabrics or notions that catch my eye. I love country cottage florals and the softly muted shades of well loved fabrics. I design lovely pillows, unique totes and purses, one of a kind cottage diaper bags, and round patchwork pincushions. I also do an occasional footstool or chair redo and even vintage knitting stands when I can find them!!!I'm so glateful to be on this journey. Come back soon for updates and my newest designs.
