The Girls Project is an innovative community based effort by the Center for Family Development in Eugene, Oregon to further the health and well-being of seriously at-risk girls in conjuction with our community partners. These include the John Serbu Juvenile Justice Center, the Martin Luther King Educational and Vocational Center, the Phoenix Secure Treatment program, and the Teen Parent Program at Catholic Community Services, among others.
Many of our girls served by this project are homeless, drug affected, and involved in the juvenile justice system. They often have fled from physical and sexual abuse and have nowhere to turn. They often suffer from anxiety, hopelessness, depression, post-traumatic stress syndrome, and other mental health issues. They are doing poorly in school or have given up and dropped out. They remain at risk for adolescent pregnancy, HIV and other STDs, and vulnerable to teen prostitution and other forms of exploitation.
The Girls Project works closely with the juvenile justice center and other agencies to provide gender sensitive and strength-based mental health and substance abuse treatment to these girls. Our focus is on healing childhood trauma by fostering resiliency and emphasizing the expressive arts, as well as, the practical development of academic and vocational skills and opportunities and social and emotional competencies. The Girls Project provides one-on-one tutoring and on-going mentor-like relationships with young women college graduates. Your generous donation will help contribute to these efforts and expand them.

Girls Voices: Poetry from the Soul
Sometimes I Cry
Sometimes I cry
just to let out all my pain
I feel inside
I feel weak
at the same time
I feel free
Tana
age 13
Inside These Walls
I know you can't hear me
I know you can't see me
But I am praying for you tonight
And I am praying carefully
I miss you alot
and I know its my fault
why we can't be together
cuz' I'm inside these walls
and it seems like forever
Memories of you make me lost
I knew this would be the cost
And still I did what I've always been doing
and now we're here again
and again, time passes by
and memories of you fill my mind
I can't find the words to say
on visiting day
Just know the thought of you
Makes my day
We will make it through
and be OK
and soon be together again
Tana, to her mother
age 13
i am someone!
when i am loved, i can love who i am, when i am
cared for, i can care for others, when i am
treated as someone, i can feel like someone.
speak to me, so i can learn to listen
expose the world to me, so i may feel seen
if your good to me, i must be a good person
when you smile at me, i can smile inside.
you can chose to respect me, and i will give a bit back
touch me gentle, so i may touch others
rest my unrest, so i may learn to soothe
love me, but give me room
to love others
when you treat me as successful, i can learn to succeed
when you respect my dreams, i can explore reality
when you allow my mistakes, i can accept what you teach
teach me diversity of thought, so i may be open minded
help me help others, so i may grow selfless
demonstrate your diligence, so i may earn my way in life
show me to laugh
so i can laugh with others
laugh at your shortcomings
so i can accept my own
i am somebody and i am loved by you!
