WHY No Mottos ?
If you have been following my Updates since April 2007, you will know I have been tracking 1908 NoMottos advertised in eBay auctions as "Uncirculated" and the MS grades since July 2006.
I chose the Saint-Gaudens design and the 1908 NoMotto year because of the "No Motto" history (below) and because it is one of the better representative samples of common date Gold Coins sold on eBay.

No Mottos
The Double Eagle with a 100 Year History
I am projecting the values of this subset will increase significantly through their 100 Year Anniversaries, 2007 and 2008 respectively. In addition, I am interested in their history. They are the only Saint-Gaudens issues actually commissioned by the then President Teddy Roosevelt, and the only years in the series without a reference to God. We will never know TR's real reason for this. However, it is my understanding that, with many coins spilling over on the brothel and gambling floors of the day, many feel the decision had something to do with the defamation of God, had a motto been struck on the original issues.
Regardless of the reason, Congress later in 1908 changed the rules of the game for all subsequent issues, beginning with the "Motto" coins minted in late 1908. As the result of this decision, of the seventy million Saint-Gaudens minted between 1907 and 1933, only 7.6% were minted with No Mottos. Then, twenty-six years after the first issue, the irony of ironies occured. In 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, TR's fifth cousin, ordered the confiscation and grand meltdown of all gold bullion coins, in anticipation of the future release of the dollar from the gold standard. The rest is history. Nobody knows the count of today's remaining populations, Motto or No Motto.
We do know only about 2.0% of the seventy million total are certified by the NGC and PCGS coin grading services. Even more significant, Certified NoMotto Saint-Gaudens is a very small 0.3% subset of the original population, about 232,000 pieces.
Beginning July 2006, the prices all Saint-Gaudens NoMottos have been updated monthly. Thank you for reading my future guides. thmxs 12/01/2006
