The CD Story
Developed jointly by Sony and Phillips of the Netherlands, in 1982 the compact disc had become the highest quality digital music format available to the consumer. Researchers and developers led by prominent members Kees Schouhamer Immink and Toshitada Doi
progressed the research into laser technology and optical discs that had originally been started by Philips in 1977.
Fun Fact
The first album to be actually released on CD was Billy Joel's “52nd Street”, that reached the market alongside Sony's CD player CDP-101 on October 1, 1982 in Japan.
Analog vs Digital
The diagram below shows the differences between analog and digital sound waves. Analog audio formats include records (LPs), and various tape formats. Digital audio formats include the CD, DAT & MP3.
What is an MP3?
MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more commonly referred to as MP3, is a digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio storage, as well as a de facto standard encoding for the transfer and playback of music on digital audio players. MP3 is an audio-specific format that was designed by the Motion Pictures Expert Group. The group was formed by several teams of engineers at Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen, Germany, AT&T-Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ, USA, Thomson-Brandt, and CCETT as well as others. It was approved as an ISO/IEC standard in 1991.
CD vs MP3.. what’s the difference?
Unlike a CD, an MP3 uses a lossy compression algorithm that is designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent the audio recording and still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio. For most listeners it is a suitable representation, but even using a higher quality MP4 or “lossless” format the digital file is nonetheless compressed and is not considered high fidelity audio when compared to an analog or CD source.
Why CDs and Records and Tapes??”
Regardless of the convenience of the MP3, many music fans love to have something tangible to hold in their hands. Something that comes from, designed and created by the artist is an amazing thing. Discs, LPs and tapes have artwork and lyrics to look through, pages to turn and are something special to collect... something that belongs to you personally. Try doing that with an MP3 :)
