Cloak FAQ
Thank you for your interest in one of our cloaks. In order to keep the text on our sales pages down somewhat, this page is designed to answer some of our most frequently asked questions. These are not part of the Terms of Service. (Not only is that against eBay policy, but we don't expect everyone to look here. That wouldn't be fair to sneak the fine print in out of the way, would it?)
Our goal is to provide quality goods at reasonable prices.
Where in the world have you been?
Good question. We had some family business to take care of, and it wasn't fair to us or you to sew cloaks and manage auctions and shipping while we were in and out of town. Some sellers are adept at doing that, but we're not. We're back, and everything and everyone is fine, thanks.
1. Who are you?
Our full business name is Threadneedle Press. There's a long story behind the name, but it has to do with a Conan Doyle story and a writer who realized he could make more money begging on a street corner. We are a legitimate business and we pay taxes. Which is why if you live in Texas you must pay sales tax. (Don't blame us; it's the law.)
2. What determines your shipping and handling charge?
We're not out to make money on shipping. The charge barely covers our shipping and handling costs in most cases. The total also covers Delivery Confirmation. We ship via Priority Mail, generally the next business day after receipt of funds. Insurance is up to you, but we strongly recommend it. If your cloak is damaged in shipment, we may not have the same fabric in stock to make a replacement.
The USPS now has a flat rate box, which means we can ship your cloak within the US for $8.10. We used to have to charge around $10.
3. Do you ship overnight? Overseas?
We will, but please contact us before you place your bid so that we may determine shipping and insurance charges. Payment must be in US Dollars.
4. What determines your opening bid?
The opening bid is intended to cover our materials and fees for listing the item and accepting your PayPal transfer. That means our opening bid may be low, but it does not mean that we skimp on the quality!
5. Do you do custom work?
Sometimes. It depends on the job and the amount of time we have in which to do it. We can finalize the transaction through ebay. That way they get their fees, we (meaning you and us) get buyer and seller protection, and everyone is happy.
6. I notice you have ties on your cloaks. I prefer to use a clasp.
We can cut the tie short and turn it back inside the neck if you wish. The ties also function as our neck facing to cover those scratchy neck seams and add strength, so we can't eliminate them altogether.
7. Are all of your cloaks black?
That's the most popular color. We are, however, on the lookout for more fabrics. If you have a special fabric/color request be sure to drop us a line.
8. I would like to send you e-mail, but I'm afraid I'll end up on some mailing list.
We share your concern. We will only use your address in regard to the current transaction. If you wish to be notified if and when we get other fabrics in, let us know. We will only contact you if you wish us to do so. (We may contact the current high bidder on an item if we have to make a factual correction to the listing. If we do, we will give the option of withdrawing the bid. It's only fair.)
Please note that eBay and PayPal have their own privacy policies and terms governing use of their services.
9. Why do you only accept PayPal, and why do you prefer to ship only to verified addresses?
Again, this is for both our protection and yours. We can accept credit cards via PayPal. Sorry, but we don't have a merchant account of our own. If a check or money order is your only option, please drop us a line before you bid and we'll be happy to see if we can work something out.
Once we get your funds, we generally ship the next business day. This means when you use PayPal, your goods will be shipped faster. Please note that if you use a PayPal Echeck that we must hold shipment until funds are deposited in our PayPal account. Generally that takes three or four business days. If you pay by check or money order, we will hold shipment for up to two weeks until the payment has cleared. We're sorry to have to do this, but we operate on a thin margin and can't afford to lose stock along with bounced check fees.
10. I just won an auction for one of your items. What do I do?
Congratulations! You have the option to pay immediately via PayPal, or wait until you receive an invoice from us. We try very hard to time our auctions so that we are available at close to send an invoice and answer any questions you may have about shipping and payment. If we are not available at the end of an auction we will generally contact you by at least the next morning. We time most of our auctions to end in the evening. Please do not hesitate to contact us during or after the auction if you have any questions.
Once we ship your item we will send you a USPS tracking number. While we ship during the day they generally update their tracking numbers in the evening. So don't be surprised if we send you a number and it is not yet in their system. If it isn't in there by the next day, please drop us a line so we can double-check the number. We would appreciate it if you let us know once you have received your item.
11. Why don't you offer Buy It Now?
We are pleased to offer Buy It Now on some auctions.
12. Why are your big/tall cloaks more expensive?
We require more fabric to make these cloaks, but we hope you think it's worth it because we don't skimp on the swirl, even for long or wide cloaks!
13. Do you have a guarantee?
Remember, this page isn't a Terms of Service. Having said that, we describe our products as fully and accurately as possible. If the product does not meet the description, please contact us so that we can resolve the problem. If you have any questions about measurements, please contact us before you bid. We want you to be happy with your purchase, and the more you know up-front, the happier you'll be (we hope!) when your cloak arrives. Generally, we'll refund money if a cloak is shipped back to us within seven business days. We'll pay return shipping. Please, this is not a license to wear the cloak for a weekend and get your money back. Try it on, but don't wear it to an event and expect a refund. You may know someone who has bought an evening dress, spilled gin and dropped cigarette ashes on the fabric, and then asked for a refund. Yeech! If you want to wear a costume for a weekend, rent one locally.
14. What is a "business day?"
A "business day" is defined as any day, Monday-Friday, that is not a legal holiday. If it is a weekday and the Post Office is closed, then it is not a business day. Therefore, if we receive your payment on a Friday or over a weekend, we will generally ship on Monday. If Monday is a legal holiday, we will generally ship on Tuesday. Many or our customers have been surprised to find that their item has been shipped within hours after they've sent payment. We can't always ship this quickly, but we aim to ship fast. After all, we order goods ourselves, and we like to get our own goodies fast. This is why we try to ship as quickly as possible.
15. Can you add waterproofing treatments to my cloak?
We could, but due to allergy concerns we prefer you treat the garments yourself. It's not difficult to do. We can recommend some products if you wish. If you wish to treat the cloak in some way, please let us know when you make the purchase and we can generally pack in a swatch of fabric you can use for testing the product before you use it on your cloak.
16. Do you make cloaks for children?
Yes, we do. Presently the cloaks we have for sale on eBay are intended for adults only. The reason for this is that we use ties, which are a safety hazard on children's garments. We are investigating the use of alternate closures for children's cloaks.
17. What is the difference between a cloak and a robe?
Good question. A robe has sleeves while a cloak does not. We presently do not do robes.
18. My question wasn't answered.
Drop us a line! We're happy to answer your questions.
