My
new found passion is in creating art dolls. For
years I have been experimenting with one art form
or another, always getting bored with the repetition
of sticking with only one thing. In the process,
I developed a wide range of skills. I was a knowledge
junkie and absorbed every new avenue of creation,
from woodworking, to weaving, sewing, crocheting,
quilting, painting, pen and inks, chair seat repair,
furniture making to metal work. My work was just
as scattered and unfocused, and I worked in everything
from fast food, agriculture, plumbing and other
construction work to dog grooming, and about 30
other "occupations".
In
essence, my entire life has been building up to
this one outlet. Art doll making is the art of
knowing a little about a lot of things, and being
able to see the possibilities in the absurd. It
is challenging, and with OOAKs, definitely
not repetitive. Never before have I fell in love
with one thing as I have with figurative sculpture.
I can combine all of my past experiences to create
something that I can breathe life into, and have
them have a voice of their own.
I
also have a fundamental need to express the irony,
humor, and human condition that I see in every
day life. To me, an art doll is not just a work
of beauty, but a work of art that can evoke emotion,
remembrance, or something as simple as a smile.
These
pieces I create, I bring to life for the sheer
joy of doing so. Far from being a "job",
it is a culmination of a life time of experience,
a passion, and finally, a place I can call home.
