I grew up in a very small, quite...okay..ridiculously... conservative town in the mountains of Colorado that no one has ever heard of. And truth be told, we had a small ranch 4 miles outside the town, so really I grew up in 'nowhere'. My closest friends were the ranch animals, the trees and the ever changing Colorado weather. I cannot remember a time when I was not seeing and speaking to the faces and figures I saw in nature around me. Of course, people tend to look at you funny when you tell them about the fascinating conversation you had with the Aspen grove in Bear Valley that morning, so I started keeping quiet, and pretty soon pencils and paper, and then paints became a replacement way for me to share my 'wee friends' with the world. And I soon found out that no one laughed at me when they saw my sketches, in fact, they encouraged it, so I just kept doing it.
I traveled very extensively in my early 20's, got married, had a son, went through 2 very interesting careers, and never left my sketching behind. Some of my best work is on restaurant napkins, or hotel stationary! Now in my 30s life has settled, my son is growing, and I have found my art making it's way off the napkins and into other peoples homes. It has gone from a way for an eccentric child to share her visions without being ridiculed to an eccentirc adult's way to make a living. It has remained a passion.
I still see faces in the trees too, in case you were wondering....
