A little about me, I am single and take care of my brother who has downs syndromes. I am lucky to have a great handicap workshop in town and he goes there for a few hours each day during the week. I got started in the antique by being raise in the business. My folks bought and sold antiques since I was a little boy in the 1960s. So about 18 years ago after a couple years bulding wooden toys I decided I could repair furniture with the knowledge I had of woodworking. So I taught myself all the joints and style of woodworking used to build old time furniture. My father and mother had sort of retired from the business but with my interest in the antique business started coming on. So we dealt in antiques together but for a few years till my Mom passed away. Dad and I continued on in the antique business which was part time job to our house painting business. Then about 8 years ago my Dad passed away. I had retired from the painting buiness the year before since I knew Dad wanted me to care for my brother. I told him I had get started on a furniture restorations business for other people if was going to be able to care for my brother since I would never have enough time to paint houses. So I started working on furniture for other people and running the antique shop from our house. After Dad passed away I got a computer and found Ebay and started selling on there. Shortly after that my insurance company imformed me they would have to change my insurance rates if I kept the shop in the house. The rates were going to triple or more and I checked out how much would be just sell on Ebay and run my furniture restoration business from the house. For a this they would just put a rider on my insurance and it would only increase a few dollars. So I closed the antique shop in my house which was hard but needed to be done. |
