Tips And Tricks For Your Household Purchase clothing and other household things at your local thrift store.  Most items there are in great condition!  It makes no sense to spend lots of money when you don't need to!  Most thrift stores run specials each month too!  For instance, Goodwill stores in our area have 50% off days once a month on all their clothes.  This is a great way to stock up on clothes for yourself, and clothes to sell!  Each day of the week both Goodwill and Salvation Army run 1/2 off specials on items tagged with a certain color.  The color of the tag almost always corresponds to the quality of the item.  Certain colors equal a certain level of quality.  Of course, if you buy items and decide you don't want them for yourself or to sell, be sure to donate them back to wherever you got them from, or give them away for free on Freecycle (see more about Freecycle below). Check out www.freecycle.org we joined our local Freecycle group, and have been able to pick stuff for FREE from people who don't want or need it anymore and give away items we don't want anymore.  Etiquette dictates that you should inform the person you get stuff from whether or not you plan on reselling it.  So far, we haven't resold anything from Freecycle, because the stuff was so nice, we wanted it for ourselves.  We've gotten clothes for ourselves and the kids, toys for the kids, and a practically brand new vacuum cleaner! If you are an Exelon customer and you have central air, find out if you qualify for their program that saves you up to $10.00 a month during the summer.  Basically, they hook up a electronic doohickey to your central a/c and if they need to shut it down (like when there's a brown out), they'll do so for a short amount of time.  We signed up for this 2 years ago, and have NEVER had the A/C turned off, but still save $10.00 a month on our electric bill...VERY COOL!  Just contact Exelon to see if this is something they offer...they don't advertise it very often and when they do, its the type of thing you might throw away if you don't read it.   Living on a low income??? Check out your state website for LIHEAP (Low income heating and energy assistance program to see if you meet their guidelines to qualify for heating and cooling assistance.  In IL, the time to apply for heating assistance is in November. Wash your clothes in COLD water...yes COLD!  It works just as well as HOT or WARM.  Some people feel like cold water won't get their clothes as clean, but with the right detergent, it shouldn't matter what temperature you use.  I don't use fancy detergent, but the detergent I do use dissolves very well in water of any temp and has color safe bleach, which also works well in any temp, so the clothes get really clean and smell good, and don't fade as much since I'm using cold water.  I also do not overload the washer.  If you heat your water with GAS, then you'll be doing yourself a huge favor by not using it to wash your clothes.  Just try it for a month and compare your gas bill to the same time last year.  All the information presented above is FREE to anyone whose interested and is not endorsed or guaranteed by Tristans_Merchant.
