BREAKING NEWS!!! Arkansas Puppy Mill Rescue!!!! http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/Arkansas.html

Looking to Buy a Puppy? Be CAREFUL

....Looking to buy a puppy? Say NO to Pet Stores. All Pet store puppies come from Puppy Mills....Also, NEVER buy a dog or puppy through an internet site. Puppy mills hide behind glossy web sites that don't tell the truth (for an expose by nbcNews, see http://www.animal-advocates.org/info/display?PageID=1684)....Best advice? Call a Breed Rescue group (check Petfinder.com) They have great pets, and also know who the RESPONSIBLE breeders are. Get a referral!

What is a puppy mill? How can you avoid buying a puppy mill puppy?

It can be hard, because those who have puppy mill puppies for sale are often dishonest about the source of their dogs. (The picture above is a typical breeding mother from a puppy mill.)

Pet stores sell puppy mill puppies because they are cheap to buy, and because NO truly reputable breeder would ever sell a pup through a pet store.

GOOD breeders CARE about where their puppies go! A good breeder wants to meet you, and help you learn about the breed. Pet stores sell to the first person with the money.

NBC news in Florida exposed a puppy mill broker in Florida who sold puppies through a glossy website, even to celebrities. These dogs were expensive, and he used lots of cute pictures of pups dressed up on his slick website. He claimed they were from reputable breeders, but NBC News exposed his words as ALL LIES. All of his puppies were purchased from puppy mills, and the big puppy mill broker in Missouri. http://www.animal-advocates.org/info/display?PageID=1684

And the puppies were SICK and genetically defective, despite the high prices and cute pictures.

Websites sell puppies. All those Internet puppy ads? Puppy mills!! Puppy mills want you to give them a credit card number or send them a check, and they will ship the puppy to you. Why? They don't want you to see the horrifying conditions that your puppy was raised in, the disease, the cruelty. They want to keep their operations hidden from sight. A good breeder will never send a dog to you sight unseen. They want to meet you, and they will welcome you to their home. NEVER order a puppy through a website.

vStop Puppy Mills

GET A REFERRAL!! You need unbiased references. Contact some breed rescues groups (Check Petfinder.com for breed rescues all over the country) Breed rescues can answer questions about the breed, its special needs, pros and cons, and can give you REFERENCES to truly reputable breeders or breed clubs that can help you. Breed rescues care about the breed, not the buck. They know the "behind the scenes" info. Contact several and talk with them. What to look for in a GOOD breeder??

VISIT the breeder. If a breeder won't let you visit their home, RUN! You want to see where exactly the dogs are raised, see and meet the mother dog.

A Puppy should be raised INDOORS (not in a cage or barn or shed.) This is a typical mill set-up Many millers won't let you see the dogs, becuse they are so ill and mistreated. If you see sheds and barns, RUN! Your puppy should be raised INDOORS with the family.

The breeder should raise only ONE breed of dog. (It is difficult and expensive to properly raise more than one type at a time. Many of the worst mills breed many breeds for maximum profit, and sadly, maximum sickness and defects.)

Examine the papers! If the puppy was shipped in from another state, it is more than likely a puppy mill puppy (no matter what stories they tell you!) You want a dog personally bred by the breeder, not ordered up from a puppy mill.

Call the breeder's veterinarian, and perhaps a few other vets in their area. Verify that the breeder is indeed breeding the dogs, and that there haven't been problems. But keep in mind, some vets work FOR puppy mills, so be careful! This is only one step.

Keep in mind that some individuals buy group lots of puppies from puppy mill, then lie and pretend to be breeders. You need to get references! You need to talk to experts who know the facts.

DON'T answer newspaper or internet ads. These are the puppy millers. A GOOD breeder gets plenty of referrals.

Consider mixed breeds. Mixed breed dogs often have a genetic health and vitality that poorly-bred purebreds lack. Many breeds have been destroyed by poor breeding, and are afflicted with genetic health and behavior problems. (And as for all those 'Designer Dogs" like puggles? They are MIXED BREED dogs, and there are thousands and thousands of them in shelters all over the country.)

What are the top states for puppy mills?

There are, sadly, puppy mills in every state in this country. But some states have higher percentages of puppy mills, and complaints about dogs sold. These states are Missouri, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma. If you live in these states, please let the media and your legislators know that you want a crackdown on puppy mills selling sick, defective dogs.

FIND OUT MORE!!

Get educated!! Do a search on Google for "puppy mill" or "puppy mills." THere are many informative sites that will help you discover more, and help you protect yourself and avoid the heartbreak of buying a sick, defective puppy.
