The Beginning
My daughter decided last year (2003) that she wanted to be in the 4-H sheep-raising program. Our neighbors have sheep and knowing next-to-nothing about these woolly beasts, we asked them if they had any sheep for sale. The woman said she had one more, and it was so strange... 'it was born ...red' she said. That was intriguing. We bought the ewe and soon realized we had bought either a California Red cross (the neighbors raise Suffolk) or a Tunis cross. Scarlet, as my daughter named her, won first in showmanship and third in spring ewe in the local fair and went to state and won first in showmanship there also. She was bred back to a Suffolk last fall (that about all there is around here... so far :), and had two beautiful spring lambs in March. The California Red is a breed established in the '70s by crossing the Tunis and Barbados. The Tunis is a very old breed dating back over 3000 yrs to Africa, and its namesake, Tunisia and the middle east. It is also know as the American Tunis and is one of the oldest breeds indigenous to the US. Tunis wool is a lustrous 24 to 30 microns, long-stapled 4 to 6 inches with a 56 to 58 spinning count. The Tunis have a rather interesting history in the US, look it up sometime! |

The Surprise!
I am now, hopelessly, hooked on wool. I like to touch it, smell it (most would say 'ewww' here), I like to pick through it, and spin it. Sometimes you just can help but pick it up and snuggle it. My daughter and I found a farm in Moab, UT that raises registered Tunis and decided to go look at them. Before I knew it, we were bringing home two black bummer Corriedales (this was not in the original plans). The Corriedale produces bulky, high-yielding wool ranging from 31.5 to 24.5 micron fiber diameter with a staple length of 3.5 to 6 inches. The surprise is that sheep are addictive. We now have 11 sheep, 5 of which are ewes that will be bred and will lamb in the spring. We bought four-registered Tunis in August from Cunnington Farms in Moab, Utah, along with two adult natural colored corriedales. I can hardly wait until sheering next spring! Most proceeds from sales on eBay go to my daughter 4-H sheep project, I will state in the auction when I post it if it is hers. |
