Uniquely Nature is a natural history gift store that offers one-of-a-kind creations designed by James H. Baker (Jim), Ph.D. Dr. Baker is a consulting biologist for numerous state and federal agencies, and he has lived and worked in the Houston area for more than 35 years. Uniquely Nature represents the fusion of his scientific knowledge, his keen eye for design and detail, and his love of Texas flora and fauna. Dr. Baker has collected and prepared biological specimens for more than 50 years, and his unique gift offerings are designed for display in a wide variety of settings. He uses meticulous preservation methods to create natural history displays of various types and sizes, including specimens from his personal collection of sea shells, crabs, insects, and other natural objects. Dr. Baker also collects and maintains an extensive nursery of ferns, various succulents, and other unusual plants. All of the natural specimens used in the gift items sold by Uniquely Nature were harvested legally, and all were collected in a way that ensures the sustainability of local wildlife and plant populations.
Dr. Baker has prepared plants and critters in artistic displays for many years, and finally at the urging of friends and colleagues, he has made his art work available to the public. Uniquely Nature currently sells pressed plants and an assortment of sea and land creatures prepared and mounted on various natural items. Plants include an assortment of maidenhair ferns, lace ferns, button fern, Japanese climbing fern, mother fern, ladder brake fern, tassel fern, and others. Flowering plants include varieties of pansies, partridge pea, daises, orchids, and other local beauties. Frame sizes for pressed plants range from 5 by 7 to 24 by 30 inches. Framed plants are available with and without matting and in a variety of background colors. Some items are also available for custom preparation and design. Assorted sea and land creatures are mounted on natural items such as driftwood, stones, shells, and clumps of barnacles or oysters, which are then attached to wooden bases, acrylic stands, or placed in enclosed glass containers.
Uniquely Nature has placed almost 15,000 books of all types on three internet sites and is doing well.
