Proudly blowing glass in the United States. About Glass
Glass is made from melted sand plus minerals for the colors. For example, cobalt blue is made with the mineral cobalt, which gives it that special blue. All of the colors you see in my work are from the beautiful range of Italian glass.
Glass is recognized around the world for its value and beauty, yet the art of glass blowing is truly under-appreciated. If you decide to collect blown glass, you must know first that the the smaller the piece the harder it was to create. Also, thin is better!
Are your pieces signed?
I sign my larger pieces, but there just isn't room on the micro miniatures! However, each one comes with a signed certifcate of authenticity with a color photo of the item.
Is glass blowing hard?
This is a commonly asked question. Yes, the answer is yes. Glass blowing is very hard and it is takes years to achieve a wide range of artistic abilities and technical precision in order to create top quality pieces. Glass blowing requires great technical skills to correctly manipulate the glass with exact timing and temperature. A glass blower must work fast and be talented creatively or the result weill be a piece that looks like a factory-reproduction with no life.
My glass rods come from Murano, Italy. I choose the colors I want to work with and heat the glass until it turns to liquid. . . sculpting, chopping and blowing to bring my visions to life. Hot liquid glass does not like to be controlled. I can't touch the 3000 degree glass with my hands, so I use basic metal tools like tweezers and a butter knife. Currently I am in the fire about 16 hours a day, 7 days a week (with breaks for family, of course). Every item you see on VILHANZANO is made by me in the furnace or torch, by hand and from scratch.
