1788 entire letter sent from Shrewsbury to Newport, Shropshire, charged 3d, the rate for distances over one but not over two post stages by Act of 1784, (24George3 Session2 Chapter25). The letter was carried to Shifnal on the London mail coach, which first ran in Sept 1785, and then turned north to Newport.

I moved from London, England to beautiful Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada in May 1989. My special interest is the postal history of the English County of Shropshire, which is on the west of the country bordering Wales. Shrewsbury is the largest town. The earliest recorded Shropshire postmark is a straight-line SHREWSBURY dated 1705 (an example of which I do not possess!). The other main towns in the county are Oswestry, Ellesmere, Whitchurch, Wem, Market Drayton, Newport, Wellington, Shifnal (which, in 1806, had the earliest Penny Post outside the major cities), Ironbridge (the Heart of the Industrial Revolution), Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Bishop's Castle. Football, Cricket and Music
My other interests are Liverpool Football Club - I refuse to call it soccer. Hearing the Kop rendering "You'll Never Walk Alone" is spine chilling! Shrewsbury Town Football Club have a new ground at Oteley Road and manage to remain in Division 2 of the Football League. As always, the team seems to take 2 steps forward and 3 back and remain mired in Div 2! I no longer play Cricket (did you know Sir Donald Bradman played cricket on Vancouver Island?!) due to old age and infirmity but I still follow Lancashire and England via the excellent BBC Sports web site (see link below).
Lastly listening to Sir Thomas Beecham conduct anything but especially Mozart is one of life's great joys. I will soon be selling some of my "spare" CD's of Classical Music on eBay, please bid generously!
