To use old hardware on modern doors, the existing latch is first replaced with one that will accept the 5/16th inch spindle found with antique doorknobs. Fortunately, reproduction latches are made to fit in the remaining space in the door after the modern latch is removed. I have reproduction latches available for $15 each. I also have reproduction mortice locks with skeleton keys for those doors that require locks. $25/each
New doors are pre-drilled with a hole that is 2 1/8 inches in diameter. Antique hardware must be chosen that is wide enough to cover that hole. A back plate that is 2 1/2 inches or wider will work. A rosette will need to be at least 2 5/8 inch wide in order to have some material for the rosette to attach to. It the door is to be painted, then the large hole can be filled in and then any antique hardware will work fine once the modern latch has been replaced.
For those who want the look of antique but also want all of their doors to match, reproduction antique hardware is the best way to go. To find enough matching antique hardware to outfit an entire home can take a great deal of time and effort. Years.. This fall I am introducing a line of reproduction hardware that has been approved and licensed by the Historic Charleston Foundation. Check back with my website to get updates.
