Whitlock's Book Barn is a used and rare bookstore that also sells old maps, prints, and ephemera.  We are located in Bethany, CT, just minutes from downtown New Haven, and we have maintained an open shop here since 1948 (open Tuesday—Sunday 9 to 5).  The bookshop is housed in 2 clean, heated, and air-conditioned barns and is adjacent to hundreds of acres of water company land.  Many shoppers enjoy walking the trails in the area when they visit the bookstore. Bethany is known for its natural beauty and its horse farms. 

Gilbert Whitlock owned the shop from 1948 to 2004, when he passed away at 88.  His father, C.E.H. Whitlock, founded Whitlock’s Inc., a large bookstore selling new, used, and rare books in downtown New Haven, in 1900, and his uncle several generations back maintained a used bookshop in New York in the 1820s.  Mr. Whitlock was widely known in America and England as a fair, kind, and knowledgeable bookseller, and belonged for decades to the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. A new owner recently took over for the Whitlock family and although he has a day job as an attorney, he is passionate about books and reading and is dedicated to keeping the bookstore thriving.
