Windstone Editions began producing the incredible sculpture of Melody Pena in 1984 and quickly grew to become a small company with a large reputation for quality, service and direct participation of the artist in all aspects of production. Ok, I guess that’s just another way to say that we have always been a family business with cross disciplines of art, design, engineering and science, and that has enabled us to make really nice, and highly collectible reproductions of Melody’s work. The very earliest pieces were a pretty eclectic mix of animals that quickly evolved into a focus on fantasy and an extension of a line of fantasy art prints that were published by our other company, Alberti Design. As with the prints, we have always based our production on using the most archival materials available, such as gypsum based mineral stone and fine art grade pigments and paints. A Windstone figurine, properly cared for, should last forever. The sculpting process begins with soft clay that is fashioned into a rough version of the finished sculpture and this basic form is then cast into harder materials into which Melody carves the final details. The process which follows to create production molds pushes the limits of possibility and the result is absolute accuracy to the original artwork. You will be able to see how much our methods have evolved by comparing the early Windstone pieces to more recent ones. Because we do not sell originals of Melody’s sculpture (except for the occasional foil animals or sketches offered for fun on eBay) she has been offering limited numbers of pieces that she paints herself and signs. Some are ideas or prototypes for future production pieces, while others are one of a kind paint schemes intended to remain unique. Limited production pieces not painted by Melody are painted by our best production painters. You can find more information and updates on new work on our forum.
