Insight to my history
Hi, I'm Mike Petrilli and welcome to my obsession with clean vintage sportscards. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh so sports have always been a big part of the fabric of the people there. Such stars as Tony Dorsett, Mike Ditka, and Ty Law, lived minutes from where I grew up. Of course, it is well documented, the hotbed of great athletes that have come from the region. Being involved in this hobby, always takes me back to that nostalgic time.
This is my story.
Outside of collecting when I was a kid, I restarted collecting in 1981. Besides buying boxes of the new cards out at the time, I started buying vintage cards through mail order. My turning point was in 1985 when I happened to meet three local guys who had collected clean mint vintage cards since the seventies. I ended up buying most of thier collections and had completed Baseball and Football sets from 1952 and up. I had also collected Hockey and Basketball sets from 69-72. In 1986 I started setting up at trade shows and amassed an extensive inventory. I opened a retail store in 1988 and was in business there for ten years. Also, I went on the road on weekends doing major trade shows, including two National card shows, from the east coast to the midwest. One of the highlights was being interviewed on television at one of the Nationals. Meeting such legends as Mantle. DiMaggio, Williams, and even the homegrown Joe Namath, were quite memorable too. I scaled back from 1998 until 2001 when I started listing on Ebay. I have found it to be a very pleasureable experience and have met many good customers.
