Fetishes, which have
been associated with Native Americans for centuries, are objects that
Indians have used and relied on for the powers they are believed to
contain, which exceed the mere abilities of mankind, to offer
assistance with their dealings of daily life. In plain terms, in our
opinion, fetishes are to Indians as the Saints are to Catholicism.
The Zunis or Ashi-wi
have developed a reputation for being the most advanced in carving
them. Because of this fact, many nearby tribes have searched for the
use of Zuni fetishes. For example, horses, goats and cattle figures
are believed to provide protection and to help propagate their herds.
Every fetish has its
own distinct purpose. To name a few, some are used for hunting,
protection, healing and propagation. To review a list of animal powers

The most significant
fetishes to the Zunis are concretions (stones which are naturally
formed or require very little carving to resemble a particular animal
or figure). Concretions are believed to be the most powerful or
spiritual and are viewed as living things. They are ceremonially cared
for with cornmeal and preserved in special jars until they are needed
again for guidance or assistance. Today, Zuni fetishes are carved with
impeccable detail and realism. They are considered works of art for
the collector, but if properly blessed by Zuni priest would still be a
significant fetish for the Zuni to use.
The use of Zuni
fetishes stems from a story known all throughout Zuni about the plight
of mankind in the beginning of the world.
In summary, in the
beginning, the world was covered with water and man resided
underground in four caverns in darkness. Man multiplied and populated
their dwelling to the point where it was unlivable. The wisest among
man beseeched deliverance from their plight to the Sun-father. The
Sun-father created two children for the good of mankind and had them
assist mankind out from each cavern up above with a ladder they built
to the roof of the highest cave. Unprotected from the monsters which
resided in the waters and that roamed the earth mankind could not
cross the waters or walk the earth. The Sun-father directed his two
children to harden the earth with their shield and lightning. The two
children also decided to harden the animals for the good of mankind.
The nimals will not be evil unto menthe two children declared,
ll stone animals shall me made to serve mankind
